Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Easy to remember
  • Easy method to do
  • Hits all essential points of study

Weaknesses

  • Does not go very deep
  • It can limit study if not accompanied by other methods

How To Do S.O.A.P.

1. Scripture

Read through the Scripture set for the day in its entirety. Do not worry about taking notes or any observations yet. Focus on reading through everything as that will build a stronger basis for context to the observations you will make.

2. Observation

Once you have read through the whole section, start making observations throughout the text. What stands out to you? Note any questions you may have and dig deeper into those. Look for things that the author of the text seems to be emphasizing.

3. Application

Take from the Scripture reading and observations and apply it to your life. Be certain that you are not just a hearer of the word, but a doer of it. Examine your life in light of the Word and walk in obedience to it.

4. Prayer

Prayer is an essential part of any Bible study method. You should start and finish with this. Without prayer throughout Bible study, it just becomes a glorified book club.

Take this time of prayer to reflect on what it is that you have read and what that means for your life. Ask the Lord for more insight and what He would have you to do in response of the Word. Also take the time to enjoy being in the presence of the Lord. Learn to grow in the discipline of prayer just as you are in the discipline of study.
