Psalm 115:2-8

2Why should the Gentiles say,
“So where is their God?”
3But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
4Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
5They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
6They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
7They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
8Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.
-Psalm 115:2-8

When you consider what something really is, it can be a humbling reality. Sure the combination of simple components can make up a complexity of sorts, but down to its base the vast majority of what we see and know is basic. Things simply are things. So the same for idols. They simply are just things. No more than that. There was this restaurant I used to frequent as a High Schooler that had a little Buddha statuette. I remember walking in and looking at the offering of coins that was left there. For years I came and went and the coins never moved or changed. As it turns out, the idol was in fact useless. So the same for all that we may call idols. Idolatry serves nothing. It is a hinderance from pursuing the truth and the right. It is a distraction from the Lord. Interestingly enough, for the uselessness of an idol, the same becomes of the one who trusts in them. Beware idolatry. Pursue after the Lord your God with a whole heart and be diligent in your pursuit of Him. Cast off those earthly burdens that weigh you down and commit yourself to the Lord.
