Proverbs 31:6-7

6      Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to those who are bitter of heart.
7      Let him drink and forget his poverty,
And remember his misery no more.
-Proverbs 31:6-7

As we often see in the proverbs, there is a time wherein we withhold and a time wherein we apply. In terms of strong drink, while it is not suitable for a king or prince to indulge, it would be prescribed for those who were perishing or in much pain. It should be carefully noted that the passage is not advising drunkenness for difficult periods of life but is stating the reality on how alcohol could affect that. It is in circumstances like this that should be taken in the context of moderation. While there are times that it is inappropriate to drink, there are also times that it could be appropriate to drink. Never forgo wisdom as you consider this subject.
