Psalm 116:5-11

5Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
6The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
7Return to your rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
8For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
9I will walk before the Lord
In the land of the living.
10I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11I said in my haste,
“All men are liars.”
-Psalm 116:5-11

Right out of the gate we are given three incredible characteristics of God. He is gracious. He is righteous. He is merciful. All three of these play together and in having all three, you have the basic gospel message. God is righteous and man is not. These stand opposed to one another. Yet, by the grace of God, He extends mercy to those undeserving. Interestingly enough, the psalmist goes from talking about these characteristics to how the Lord delivered him from affliction. This theme of the righteous, gracious mercy of God being at the core of salvation and deliverance has been told from the very beginning. Praise God for the salvation He brings!
