Psalm 135:8

8He destroyed the firstborn of Egypt,
Both of man and beast.
-Psalm 135:8

The death of the firstborn of Egypt holds a much stronger spiritual weight than what it initially appears. Many scholars and theologians have studied through the Exodus and landed at the conclusion that the exit from Egypt typifies our salvation. In that, the death of the firstborn also typifies the death of our flesh. We have a similar understanding coming from Jacob and Esau. Esau is the firstborn and is the one who wickedly sold his our birthright to gratify the desires of his flesh, whereas Jacob was the one who wrestled with God and was transformed. See what was said to Rebekah when she questioned the Lord on what was going on as these two waged against one another in her womb.

23 And the Lord said to her:
“Two nations are in your womb,
Two peoples shall be separated from your body;
One people shall be stronger than the other,
And the older shall serve the younger.”
-Gen. 25:23

We are first born in the flesh. What happens when we are born again? The birth right goes to that which was born in spirit instead of that which was born in flesh. Our flesh does not receive the inheritance, but our spirit does. The fact is that our flesh must die so that we can walk in the Spirit. Jesus says it like this.

26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
-Luke 14:26-27

Let us deny ourselves and take up the cross and follow after Jesus. The flesh is not covered by the blood of the lamb. The spirit is cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. The flesh must come under the authority of the spirit and be put to death. I encourage you to read through Romans 8 today to further understand what it means to walk in the spirit and not in the flesh. The Lord has made you new that you may walk in newness of life. Praise the Lord!
