Proverbs 3:7-8
7Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
8It will be health to your flesh,
And strength to your bones.
-Proverbs 3:7-8
We must consider ourselves with humble judgement. When we become wise in our own eyes, we tend to trust ourselves. This directly proceeding the instruction to lean not on our own understanding should resonate with the type of command that is being given. We cannot trust our own flesh. We cannot trust our own wisdom. We must depend fully upon that of the Lord. Fear Him and depart from evil. As we do, we find ourselves in a certain security. Now this does not mean that you will always live life perfectly healthy, however it does mean that you can save yourself a lot of hurt from staying away from sin.
Consider the vast amount of diseases and trauma people experience as a result of sin. Perhaps you bear your own scars of consequences of sinful actions. Should the alcoholic have stayed his hand from hard drink, would he still be suffering liver disease? Had the glutton built upon a life of discipline, would there still be such heart disease? Now these things may still come about outside of sin, but there is no doubt that we bear physical consequences of sin in our lives. Keep yourself from it and walk in obedience to the Lord. It can save you a lot of physical repercussions.
