Proverbs 6:1-5

My son, if you become surety for your friend,
If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
2You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
3So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
4Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
5Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
-Proverbs 6:1-5

One of the beautiful things about the book of Proverbs is how swiftly applicable it can be. Take the above passage in the concept of debt. There is a lot of caution issued regarding debt here and how that enslaves you to the lender mutually. They are enslaved to you paying back, and you to paying them back. We mostly understand this from the perspective of the receiving end so we will look at it from that perspective.

Scripture gives very sound advice for how we should steward our finances well. One of the ways it does so is by showing the danger of poor financial habits. While the world popularizes the idea of loans, credit cards, payment plans, and other alternative means of borrowing money, we should hold to a certain degree of hesitancy with that. We may find ourselves over burdened with payments and debts because of poor financial decisions. As such, we inhibit ourselves from being as effective as we could be with generosity since we have nothing to give. The call to wisdom is not just in major life decisions, but also in the small day to day decisions. Walk in wisdom through all things, even in finances.
