Proverbs 6:16-19 - Sowing Discord
16These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.
-Proverbs 6:16-19
The one who sows discord among brethren is directly opposed to the work of the Lord. Gossip, slander, and discord are sown in the same vein as division from one another. As the Lord has us striving for unity, the enemy seeks to divide. We need to caution ourselves with what we are willing to divide over. Our culture has pushed us into this corner that as long as you have a mild disagreement with someone, there is no chance at unity. What we have failed to see is that unity is not uniformity. Being of the same mind does not mean we think identically, but that we press forward on the same purpose. We need to remember that the heart of the Lord is to unify us together. Paul points out how we must strive for this,
I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
-Eph. 4:1-3
We are to endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit. When I think of endeavoring for something, I do not think it will be easy or take no effort. On the contrary, I think of it as something that will take endurance and persistence. The easy road is to sow discord, cause division, and divide yourself. We must strive to maintain unity. I will leave you with Psalm 133,
1Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!
2It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.
3It is like the dew of Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore.
