Proverbs 10:10

10He who winks with the eye causes trouble,
But a prating fool will fall.
-Proverbs 10:10

In our culture, winking means something very different than what it does biblically. For us, it is a playful gesture. However, in those times it was used to communicate something suggestive, ignoring opposition, or devising evil. The one who was winking was often not thought of to be up to anything good. Prating means to speak foolishly. These are being compared and contrasted with one another to demonstrate the nature of evil in each. One is thinking to himself, silently pondering sin, while the other is boasting about it and in it. This makes me think of 1 Timothy 5:24,

24 Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later.
-1Timothy 5:24

Regardless of whether one is lost in thought about wickedness or boasting of it, the issue is still sin. Let us not make the mistake to think that just because sin is in secret that it is not sin. The Lord sees it all, even into the thoughts and intents of our hearts. Be wary then and set your mind on things above. Be intentional with walking righteously and thinking righteously. Fill your mind with the word of God. To conclude,

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
-Phil 4:8-9
