Proverbs 10:11

11The mouth of the righteous is a well of life,
But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
-Proverbs 10:11

This Proverb becomes more clear as we answer the question, "What makes someone righteous?" The answer is the typical Sunday School, "Jesus!" It is salvation. The Lord is the one that determines righteousness. This is he who is walking in the ways of the Lord. What ought to fill the mouth of the one who walks in the ways of the Lord? More than likely, it would be the direction of following the paths of the Lord. He who is walking the walk is talking the talk. The one who is saved is testifying of his salvation. But what of the wicked?

The wicked, likewise, speaks concerning their paths. The word in the Hebrew for violence is hamas. It means violence, wrong, cruelty, and injustice. So is that which covers the mouth of the wicked.

I find the question naturally arises, what do your words say about your standing with the Lord? Let me offer this challenge if your words fall short of where they should. Do not simply try to change the way you speak. Rather, let your environment be saturated with the word of the Lord. Drop the TV shows and movies. Listen to Christian music. Invest time into the word of God. You will be surprised at how quickly you become sensitive to the things of the Lord and disgusted with distasteful language. At the same time you will find your language shift to being a well of life as well. I pray your language will represent the Lord clearly.
