Proverbs 10:19-21
19In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
21The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of wisdom.
-Proverbs 10:19-21
The Proverbs puts a lot of emphasis on our words. It is interesting how concerned Scripture is with what we say and how we say it, and how little concerned we have become with it in our modern culture. I am not simply talking about vulgarity, though that is apart of it. What makes up the content of what we say? Many people seem to have nothing to speak of unless they are gossiping. The restraint of our lips is beneficial and necessary. The words of the wicked destroy, but the words of the righteous are made to build up. It is choice silver.
Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. So what does it say of the one who speaks only wickedness? Verse 20 indicates little worth. The words of the righteous are worth so much for that which is within is pure. Examine your words, and in so doing, examine your heart. Be so saturated in the things of the Lord that your words are well seasoned with salt.
