Proverbs 13:25

25The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul,
But the stomach of the wicked shall be in want.
-Proverbs 13:25

There are two things that I want to focus on through this Proverb. The first is the discipline of eating. It is an issue we have grown uncomfortable talking about in the Church, but is seen as just as much of a problem in excess as any other substance. The glutton may not be as out of their mind as the drunk, but the problem remains the same. There is a lack of self-control and a desire for excess.

This leads into the second point which is the underlying message of this Proverb: contentment. We can dance circles all day around how to fight against addiction and gluttony and things of all kinds, but the root problem that it comes to is contentment. The push for one more bite is evidence in not being content with the last. The goal of one more drink is that the one did not satisfy. Excess opposes contentment, and unfortunately our culture is built around making you discontent in what you have that you might upgrade to the next big thing. The righteous are satisfied, but the wicked ever pursue. Will you be content?
