Proverbs 17:2

2A wise servant will rule over a son who causes shame,
And will share an inheritance among the brothers.
-Proverbs 17:2

There is a value that godliness and righteousness has even in the eyes of wicked men. What father desires for their son to cause them shame? Walking in wisdom and righteousness sets forth an example that prevails over that shame and shows one's conduct to be in good standing. This proverb stands to encourage the one who walks in wisdom while also warning the one who walks in shame. A more recent example of this may be found in Romans 11. Those of the flock of Israel who do not confess the Messiah are cut off that the Gentiles might be grafted in. Where one is cut off due to unbelief, the other is brought in because of faith. And so those among the Gentiles partake in the inheritance, being counted among those of Israel. May we then be wise and continue in belief rather than walking in shameful ways.
