Proverbs 17:3

3The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
But the Lord tests the hearts.
-Proverbs 17:3

Scripture often uses the analogy of refining pots working silver or gold to talk about how the Lord tests the hearts of His people. A crucible was used to melt down silver or gold ores to help remove the impurities. Slag would be removed, and what would remain is purified silver or purified gold. Once the impurities were removed, it could then be worked into the shape that the craftsman would desire. Similarly to these tools being used to purify metals, the Lord uses things in our lives in order to purify our hearts. James says to rejoice in trials because it produces perseverance. Our faith is being purified through trials. Circumstances in our lives may purify our hearts. We may get convicted through study of the Word. The Spirit of the Lord may just set us on a path where we are purified through a variety of things. All this to be said, the Lord will test our hearts and bring to completion the work that He has set forth. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness!
