Proverbs 17:5
5He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker;
He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.
-Proverbs 17:5
Verses like this make me want to dive deeper. Why would mocking the poor of all things be called out as what reproaches our Maker? There are a few things that stand out. First and foremost is that these individuals are made in the image of God. To make a mockery of the creation is to make a mockery of the Creator. Additionally, God's heart is for the poor and broken hearted. We deliberately go against Him when our aid to them is mockery. Similarly, the one who rejoices in calamity or the misfortune of others is also condemned. Our delight should not be in such places, but should be in the Lord. Care for the Lord's creation and honor the Creator.
