Proverbs 17:13

13Whoever rewards evil for good,
Evil will not depart from his house.

There are indeed consequences for the things that we say and do in our lives. In fact, some calamity may very well be upon us as consequences of sinful behavior. We need to have sincere caution in our conduct lest we fall into this. When one does good and they are rewarded with evil instead, that evil pays in full to the one who gave the reward. For whatever the reasoning behind such a reward is, it is not mentioned. It is not simply intent that is measured here. It is action; cause and effect taking place to its fullest. The one who sows an evil seed reaps an evil reward. See then that God is just and allows consequences to be those consequences. Praise the Lord then also for His mercy that He offers to us. For we all were warranted an evil reward for the wickedness we have committed. But now we have been made righteous through the blood of Jesus. Let us walk in righteousness.
