Proverbs 18:4

    4      The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
    The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.
-Proverbs 18:4

If you have ever been to an area that has deep waters, it can be rather intimidating. Having grown up in Southern California, it was a normal event to head to the beach, walk along the pier and overlook the vast expanse of waters before me. As I would look over the railings and examine the waters below, the thought always occurred, "I wonder how deep it is." The deep waters concealed greatly.

As one who likes to find beautiful streams for fishing, I have also come alongside many flowing brooks. While the deep waters I had experienced where concealing and murky, the flowing brooks had clarity to them. I could see each rock that lie beneath the surface, as well as many of the fish I had hoped to catch.

The point is this, the words of a man's mouth conceal many things of themselves, often times even to themselves. However, the wellspring of wisdom brings clarity to these things and helps to discern and bring understanding concerning them. Wisdom is a necessity for us to understand one another and even ourselves. So let us cleave to wisdom and grow in true understanding. Be invested in the study of the Word and be devoted to unceasing prayer.
