Proverbs 19:4
4Wealth makes many friends,
But the poor is separated from his friend.
-Proverbs 19:4
Remember, when reading through the Proverbs, that we need to have discernment on certain verses. For verses like this are not making a claim as to what is or is not righteous, but rather analyzes the state of mankind in regard to various situations. In this case, we have a certain law of attraction playing out. The one who has wealth has friends, and the one who does not have wealth does not have friends. What is significant about this? The individual himself is not what is prominent. The wealth of the individual is what is shown here. Therefore, are these "friends" attracted to the person, or to the wealth? Certainly, it is the wealth. The rich may have many friends, but they are found to be shallow. The poor may lack the multitude, but the ones they have are there on the basis of character, not selfish gain. What shall we make of this then? Be discerning on the intent of the friends you are surrounded with. What are they there for? Similarly, weigh your own intent in your friendships as well. Let all you do be found in righteousness.
