Proverbs 20:25

25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy,
And afterward to reconsider his vows.
-Proverbs 20:25

This is something that is mostly lost to us in time. Devoting something as holy is to call it sacred. It is to say that it is dedicated to the Lord's use. In short, it is no longer something that the individual possesses for himself. It is the Lord's. The lesson here is not that dedicating something to the Lord is a problem. The lesson is that we should count the cost. What becomes of something that we, in haste, offer to the Lord and then later try to take back. Consider the offense of that in any situation.

Let us say that you have a friend who is in need of a vehicle. In a moment of kindness, you give them up your vehicle and you say, "This is yours!" When you come back and realize that you actually really liked having that vehicle, you then go back and try to take it from them, insisting that it is your vehicle. Yes, you may get it back, but at what cost? When we give of ourselves and dedicate it to the Lord, we ought not try to take it back into the clutches of our own grasp. Let us be those wise men and women who count the cost before building.
