Proverbs 20:30
30Blows that hurt cleanse away evil,
As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.
-Proverbs 20:30
This is a lesson many of us have learned early on. It is one that continues to come up as a parent. It is one that we have seen play out many times over. The lesson is this: pain is a good educator. Anyone who has been mildly shocked knows they want to stay away from lightning. Anyone who has touched something hot knows they do not want to stick their hands in the fire pit. Anyone who has had the honor of being on the wrong side of the switch knows they do not want to further the wrath of punishment. As such, we have learned and been trained to avoid that behavior that ends in the consequence of pain.
What is important for us to realize is that the Lord will use pain in our lives to drive us back to Him. While all pain may hurt, not all pain is bad. The pain I felt for talking back to my dad was not fun, but it was good. It taught me not to continue such behaviors. When we suffer pain in our lives, we should pray and seek the Lord over it. Let that drive us back to the Lord and in deeper relationship with Him. Let us recognize that sometimes pain is the right solution.
