Proverbs 21:4

4A haughty look, a proud heart,
And the plowing of the wicked are sin.
-Proverbs 21:4

We seem to understand this instinctually, even by our own vocabulary, that pride is a filling up and humility is an emptying of. We call it being prideful and describe being humbled like things being removed. No wonder why the Lord resists the proud but gives grace to the humble! If you are trying to fill a vessel, you cannot fill a vessel that is already full of something else. You need one that is empty. When the Lord offers us His Spirit, how can His Spirit dwell within us if we are so full of ourselves? There is contention there. Let us then empty ourselves before the Lord and pray that the Lord may further empty us that we may be filled by Him.
