Proverbs 23:4-5

4Do not overwork to be rich;
Because of your own understanding, cease!
5Will you set your eyes on that which is not?
For riches certainly make themselves wings;
They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
-Proverbs 23:4-5

I see this as being one of the most relevant passages in our society today. We boast about being workaholics. We brag about how busy we are. If someone is not busy, we blame them as though they are not trying hard enough. We think balance is impossible to find and when someone does find balance, we also insult them for not striving hard enough to get to the next thing. Our society has built itself upon making us discontent with our situation. We always need to be moving up. Settling and contentment is the sin of sins among us. And so we overwork ourselves to gain a prize that flies away. We long and strive to get the latest and greatest of all the things knowing full well that we will be complaining about it just months later. As believers, we should strive instead for balance and contentment in all things. Let not greed, but the Lord direct your steps.
