Proverbs 24:21-22

    21      My son, fear the LORD and the king;
    Do not associate with those given to change;
    22      For their calamity will rise suddenly,
    And who knows the ruin those two can bring?
-Proverbs 24:21-22

Once again, given the nature of our political climate, this is a very timely verse. Undoubtedly we should fear the Lord, but there is also a degree of fear we should have in regard to our governing authorities. This does not mean that we lie in panic or just have awe and reverence. But instead, we ought to have a humble perspective of them as an authority over us. Those that are "given to change" are those that are rebellious to authority. We ought not associate with those who are outright rebellious. Having the understanding that the Lord is the final authority over all things should give us a different kind of perspective regarding our leaders. To join together with those who are simply rebellious gives grounds for calamity and ruin. The hope for the believer is to be able to lead a quiet and peaceable life, that we may worship and bring others to worship the Lord. We must pray for our governing authorities instead of simply rebelling.
