Psalm 12
1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases!
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor;
With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips,
And the tongue that speaks proud things,
4 Who have said,
“With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are our own;
Who is lord over us?”
5 “For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy,
Now I will arise,” says the LORD;
“I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.”
6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
Like silver tried in a furnace of earth,
Purified seven times.
7 You shall keep them, O LORD,
You shall preserve them from this generation forever.
8 The wicked prowl on every side,
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.
-Psalm 12
In a world that is obviously so set against the Lord, what hope is it that we can rely upon?
There is no doubt for most of us that the world appears to be growing in wickedness more and more. Common sense is uncommon. Civility is no longer civil. Chivalry is now being spat upon. The desire for truth within our very churches has diminished for simple words of comfort. Many of us can resonate with the opening of this passage. Indeed it appears that the godly man ceases.
As we recognize this reality, it can become extremely easy to let our countenance fall and our hearts to grow weary. I encourage you to emulate David within this Psalm. While he recognizes that the many and turned against the Lord and their words of rebellion, he also remembers the faithfulness of God.
6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
Like silver tried in a furnace of earth,
Purified seven times.
7 You shall keep them, O LORD,
You shall preserve them from this generation forever.
The word of the Lord is faithful and His promises endure forever. Even as the wicked prowl about and mock the Lord, He endures. While lies are told in this world and deceit is ever near to our ears, the Lord remains truthful and keeps His word. His words are purity within a world of corruption.
If you are at all disheartened by the state of this world, lift your eyes to the Lord and return to His word as you remember Who is faithful. Be steadfast and continue to dive into His word. It is like honey to our lips and the knowledge of it is pleasant to our souls. Rest in His promises and grow not disheartened at wickedness.
