Psalm 16

    1      Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.

    2      O my soul, you have said to the LORD,
    “You are my Lord,
    My goodness is nothing apart from You.”
    3      As for the saints who are on the earth,
    “They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.”

    4      Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god;
    Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,
    Nor take up their names on my lips.

    5      O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup;
    You maintain my lot.
    6      The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
    Yes, I have a good inheritance.

    7      I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel;
    My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
    8      I have set the LORD always before me;
    Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.

    9      Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
    My flesh also will rest in hope.
    10      For You will not leave my soul in Sheol,
    Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
    11      You will show me the path of life;
    In Your presence is fullness of joy;
    At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
-Psalm 16

Are your affections centered upon God? You who are in Christ Jesus, Saints of the Most High, in whom God delights, do you delight in Him?

The Lord is our reward and our portion. There is an understanding that we must come to as believers. Hell is not hell because it is hot and torturous. It is Hell because it is completely and utterly devoid of God and all He has. Likewise, Heaven isn't heaven because it is a really cool place with gold streets and happy memories. It is Heaven because it is where the fullness of God is. Heaven is not what we are striving for, relationship with the Father is.

In 2 Corinthians 5 when Paul talks about our reconciliation, he does not say we are reconciled to Heaven, but to God. The problem humanity suffers is that they hasten after another god, not that they hasten for hell. In hastening for another god they hasten for hell, but that is not their goal. As we hasten for the Lord, we also hasten for heaven, though it be not the goal we strive for. We were not told to surrender to heaven, but to the Lord. We are not instructed to love heaven above all else, but to love the Lord.

Set the Lord before you in all things. Let Him be your goal and reward. The very peace and nature of heaven can dwell within you now should you let Him dwell in you richly. He will lead you in life, in fullness of joy as you delight in Him.

So I ask again, are you affections centered upon God?
