Proverbs 25:20

20Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather,
And like vinegar on soda,
Is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
-Proverbs 25:20

Once again, let us consider the analogy that is presented. As it gets colder and colder, how would you feel if someone took your coat away? What if they also removed your gloves and warm hats? And what of the rest of your garments? You will simply be left cold. So the same for the individual who is simply told, "Cheer up," when they are down. Our little cliches that we say to those who are hurting are rarely productive to actually uplifting them. Scripture teaches us to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. We must learn to walk with more compassion and love to those who are in a different place of life than ourselves.
