Proverbs 26:18-19

18Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death,
19Is the man who deceives his neighbor,
And says, “I was only joking!”
-Proverbs 26:18-19

We need to learn to take accountability for our actions. We cannot blame our mistakes upon external factors. Saying things like, "I was hangry," is a cheap excuse to sin against one another. Indeed that may have been a major part of why you had done what you had done, but the fact remains that you did that thing. When it gets exposed that you had been lying to someone and trying to cover it with, "I was only joking!" or "I didn't mean it!" is insufficient. It is like a man who has been driven to insanity and is wildly firing off arrows. We cannot cover our bases by saying that we were only joking. Take ownership and apologize. Seek to reconcile. Do not be so prideful as to think that you can cover your bases. I would rather a man apologize to me than make excuses for the wrong he has done to me. So the same, I should do unto others.
