Proverbs 26:28

28A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it,
And a flattering mouth works ruin.
-Proverbs 26:28

It would do us well to consider the effect our words can have on others. It would also do us well to consider the intent of what we say. To those who lie, Scripture indicates a hatred for the party that is being lied to. It is ironic as we say things like, "I lied to her because I care for her." But what happens when the truth is revealed? Does that individual come out protected and preserved? Or do they come out further damaged? Indeed, they come from such experiences more hurt than if the truth were spoken. In a similar vein, just as lying conceals the truth, we often find that flattery conceals intent. Flattery is a tool for the wicked to get past their wickedness. False teachers use flattery to earn spots in high places where they can have a platform to spread lies. But what is flattery? It is empty words. It does not change anything, nor does it give any lasting effect. We instead are to be those who speak the truth in love. This should be the substance of who we are as believers.
